No fewer than 290, 887 road traffic violators across the country, have been arrested by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) between January and June.
The Corps Marshal, of the corps, Malam Shehu Mohammed disclosed this at a press briefing on Thursday in Abuja.
Mohammed said that the violators were arrested in connection with 319,798 road traffic offences.
He also disclosed that within the period in 2024, the corps arrested no fewer than 250,720 offenders for committing 271,895 offences.
According to him, the statistic when compared shows a 16 per cent rise in arrests and also 14.9 per cent increase in offences booked.
“The increase in the percentage of arrests and offences does not reflect FRSC as a weakened institution.
“On the contrary, it affirms that the corps is more vigilant and responsive to ensuring safety through visible enforcement.”
The corps marshal revealed that within the period under review, more than 30 million people travelled using 2.3 million vehicles across the country’s national road network.
He said that the volume of vehicles and passengers on the roads had a correlative impact on the total number of offenders and offences booked.
He also said that it called for more effort from the corps personnel to meet up with the expectations for safety by the motoring public.
According to him, Anambra and Kano State alone accounted for more than 6.5 million passengers representing 22 per cent of the total people who traveled.
“These figures clearly demonstrate that the scale of road usage was quite high with attendant pressure on the road infrastructure and on our workforce.
“Let me state unequivocally that FRSC is not overwhelmed. The corps is a resilient and committed agency rising to meet up with the growing national challenge with professionalism and innovation.
“You will recall that our management made a solemn commitment to reposition and strengthen the corps on all fronts. I wish to assure that we are relentless in our commitment towards achieving the strategic objectives of this administration.”
The FRSC boss added that the corps was determined to ensure that the motoring public complied with road traffic laws and regulations through special enforcement operations for the remaining part of the year.
He said that the FRSC would adopt stringent measures of enforcement by strengthening Mobile Court sessions and special monitoring operations to deal with recalcitrant drivers on the highways.
“It is expected that these measures will impact positively on driver behaviour thus ensuring safety on our roads. Let me remind us all that road crash is a societal challenge, and our response must be strategic, sustained, and supported by all stakeholders.
“As we move into the third quarter of 2025, I charge all Commanding Officers to intensify field operations, maintain discipline, and uphold the core values of the corps.
“We shall continue to demonstrate in words and in deeds that the FRSC is committed to achieving its statutory mandate.
“I call on all stakeholders and the motoring public to speak out in the face of reckless conduct on our roads as we journey towards achieving the vision for zero traffic-death in Nigeria,” he said.(NAN)
