A Kwara High Court sitting in Ilorin on Tuesday remanded Yakub Afolayan, 32, in prison custody over alleged customs job scam and impersonating the Comptroller General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ali (Rtd).

Justice M. Abdulgafar ordered that the accused be remanded in Oke Kura Prison and adjourned the case until April 3 for continuation of trial.

Afolayan is facing a four-count charge bordering on impersonation, job scam, and obtaining money under false pretense.

He was arrested on March 5, following complaints from one of his victims.

Earlier in his testimony, an Assistant Superintendent of Customs, Mr Emmanuel Furo, told the court how the accused was arrested.

“On Jan. 13, one of his victims came to our office to lodge complaint that the accused promised to secure a job for him at the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).

“He said that the accused had collected various sums of money from him, and so, he came to find out if the NCS was actually recruiting or not.

“We told him that the NCS is not recruiting and that if it is recruiting, it does not collect money from anyone for recruitment,” he said.

Furo said that they went to the accused’s house and arrested him and also recovered different fake NCS application forms from his house.

He explained that all the recovered application forms did not emanate from the NCS. NAN
