The Enugu State Government has confirmed the death of Mr. Uwakwe Abugu, the Chief Press Secretary to the State Governor. He died of prostate cancer.

A statement from the Commissioner for Information, Mr Ogbuagu Anikwe in Enugu on Tuesday said that Abugu passed on Tuesday in a hospital in India after a protracted illness.

Ogbuagu said that the state Governor, Chief Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi had visited late Abugu’s Enugu residence at Independence Layout, to condole with the family.

Late Abugu was appointed Chief Press Secretary in June 2015. Before his appointment, he was the South East Bureau Chief of the New Telegraph Newspaper.

The commissioner said that burial arrangement would be announced by the family.

He prayed for the repose of his soul.

Colleagues eulogized the departed Abugu. Mr. Ike Abonyi, Media Adviser to PDP Chairman, Uche Secondus wrote: “Again so soon after Imam Imam, media world has lost yet another gem. This time my own brother Uwakwe Abugu, Enugu State Gov’s CPS, a nice, hardworking man who cannot hurt a fly. A fine journalist whom I helped to recruit into new Telegraph from where he was appointed as Chief Press Secretary is dead. Please pray for his soul”.

His colleague in the Enugu State government and Commissioner for Information, Mr Ogbuagu Anikwe described him as a gem. “We lost a gentleman, a good man, Mr. Uwakwe Abugu, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Enugu State. Sad day for all of us in the media team. Uwakwe, I knew you for a very short time, but it was as if we knew each other for ages, the way we related, did the work together, and watched out for each other”, he said of him.
