National Chairman of APGA, Victor Oye
The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), says it is still studying the circumstances of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill which was refused presidential assent last week.
Dr the National Chairman of APGA told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka on Tuesday that the furor which the bill generated recently was not necessary.
Oye observed that some opinions on the matter showed that most commentators on the issue had not critically thought it over.
He said caution must be exercised as all avenues to resolving the bill passage impasse had not been exhausted.
Oye observed that the National Assembly could still make the bill to become law if it required number and that President Muhammadu Buhari had exercised his powers as he deemed fit.
According to him, I don’t know why people are raising dust over the matter, election is not a do-or-die affair, people are just responding with haste and desperation.
“APGA as a party, we want to wait for the National Assembly to react to what is before them before we can react to it. The constitution is clear on how the president can assent to bills and the powers National Assembly has to veto, we should not be acting on impulse and call people names.”
“It is the president’s prerogative to sign or not to sign and now that he has refused to sign, the National Assembly should do their part. If the National Assembly has the number, let them use it, we should not be over heating the polity,” he said.
The APGA national chairman said the party was ready and confident as the general election approached, noting that the big party was only afraid of his party.
He said APGA was satisfied with the preparations of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on the forthcoming elections and urged it to remain focused.
“APGA has no fear, no apprehension, people are just crying wolf where there is none, let them stop the propaganda and focus on campaign issues.”
“I think INEC is ready for this election, forget about the noise, APC and PDP are just afraid of APGA and defeat that will come their way. Enough of the blame games and accusations, the masses have endorsed APGA for the future,” he said. (NAN)
