The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Uyo Zonal Directorate, has apprehended 11 persons over alleged illegal mining activities

The Head, Media and Publicity, Mr. Dele Oyewale, said in a statement in Uyo on Monday, that the suspects were seven Chinese and four Nigerians.

Oyewale said that the suspects were arrested on July 24, at Emem-Asuk in Eastern Obolo Local Government Area.

“The suspects were undertaking mining activities in Eastern Obolo without licenses. They were illegally mining ilmenite, locally known as black sand.

“They were apprehended while setting up mining equipment at a second location,” he said.

The EFCC spokesman said that the suspects would be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations.
