The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has announced that new digital reforms within Nigeria’s education sector are actively safeguarding academic qualifications and eliminating certificate racketeering across the country.
Speaking during a bilateral meeting in Abuja with the Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig.-Gen. Olakunle Nafiu, Alausa highlighted key technological initiatives under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda designed to close data verification gaps.
According to a statement by the minister’s Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Mr. Ikharo Attah, these digital tools aim to protect legitimate students from administrative delays during national service mobilization and job recruitment.
Core Digital Initiatives Introduced:
Nigerian Education Repository Data Bank (NERD): Collects and authenticates university credentials while supporting tertiary institutions via specialized help desks.
Nigerian Education Data Infrastructure (NEDI): Connects academic records across every tier of a learner’s educational pathway.
National Learner Identification Number: Establishes a singular, continuous digital ID for every student from enrollment onward.
End-to-End Digitization: Automates education support services, including the verification of local degrees and foreign applicant credentials.
The Ministry and NYSC are currently finalizing an Application Programming Interface (API) to enable real-time data exchange between both entities. Alausa noted that this integration will resolve common data bottlenecks, such as name sequence discrepancies, admission issues for National Certificate in Education (NCE) holders entering Higher National Diploma (HND) programs, and part-time National Diploma mobilization delays.
To create a unified framework, the Ministry plans to convene a joint task force featuring the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
Brig.-Gen. Nafiu affirmed the NYSC’s readiness to deepen ties with the Ministry, noting that the Corps’ adoption of QR codes has already virtually eradicated document cloning in its operations.
He added that recent talks with JAMB and NIMC will soon open a regularization window for graduates currently impacted by name discrepancies.
