Court grants ex parte order restraining two Bauchi lawmakers from parading themselves as State Assembly Leaders

A Bauchi State High Court has granted an ex parte order restraining Kawuwa Damina and Tukur Ibrahim from parading themselves as Speaker and Deputy Speaker respectively.

Both lawmakers emerged Speaker and Deputy after 18 members conducted a parallel election at the State Assembly Complex in front of a symbol of the Mace.

The ex parte order by the court was granted after 13 members of the State Assembly went to seek a constitutional interpretation regarding the actions of the 18 members.

They were granted an interim injunction pending the hearing of the motion which has been adjourned to July 2, 2019.

Recall that the state Assembly was in disarray on Thursday, as members elected two Speakers in separate elections.

11 out of the 31 elected members sat as early as 7:00 am and elected Abubakar Suleiman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the Speaker of the House.

The situation took a twist as 18 members of the house held a parallel election in front of the statue of the Mace symbol at the Assembly complex around 11:00 am.

The members decided to hold the parallel election because they could not gain access into the chamber.
