The leadership of the Ikeja Computer Village in Lagos has begun a biometric registration and enumeration exercise to sanitise the market, curb criminal activity, and restore investors’ confidence.
The Leader of the market women (Iyaloja) at the Computer Village, Mrs. Abisola Azeez, said in a news conference in Lagos that the exercise was part of a broader rebranding effort to address issues like phone snatching, fraudulent technicians and substandard goods.
Azeez said that the market’s leadership announced the move after a recent security incident led the Lagos State Task Force to consider a complete shutdown of the village.
She said that the market representatives intervened to safeguard legitimate traders.
According to the Iyaloja, under the new rules, only registered vendors with Identification cards displayed at their stalls will be allowed to operate within the market.
“Approved street setups will be limited to plastic chairs, show glasses, and umbrellas, while wooden structures and open flames are banned to reduce fire hazards,’’ she said.
The Leader of the market men (Babaloja) in the Village, Adeniyi Olasoji, said that the market’s damaged image needed to be redeemed.
Olasoji emphasised the need for new security measures such as CCTV, emergency alert systems, and increased collaboration with law enforcement.
The other leaders at the conference include: Prince Tony Nwakeze, Ralph Chibuzor, Ben Onuorah, Mr. Nofiu Akinsanya and Mr. Ikani Tony.
The registration would be completed within two months, after which only verified traders would be allowed to operate in the Computer Village. (NAN)
