Governor Dapo Abiodun
The General Overseer of Victory Life Bible Church, Rev. Lawrence Achudume, has made a passionate appeal to Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, to withhold his assent to the newly passed pregnancy termination bill.
Achudume made the call on Sunday during a thanksgiving service held in Abeokuta to mark the 50th anniversary of the Ogun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
Describing the proposed legislation as a dangerous move, the cleric warned that if signed into law, the bill could encourage abortion and result in the loss of countless unborn lives across the state.
Achudume revealed that he was alerted to the proposed law by international contacts and a prominent Christian leader from Plateau State.
Following the notification, he reached out to the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), which subsequently drafted a formal petition urging the governor to reject the bill.
“Gov. Abiodun is a decent leader who loves children and humanity; he should reject this proposal in the interest of protecting human lives,” Achudume stated. “Nigeria has experienced enough bloodshed and should not support policies that could encourage further loss of innocent lives.”
He urged the governor to safeguard the legacy of his administration by ensuring that Ogun State does not legalize actions that facilitate the termination of pregnancies.
Commending the state government for its efforts, Achudume noted that Ogun has maintained relative peace and remained free from acts of terrorism due to the administration’s peaceful disposition.
The appeal comes after the Ogun State House of Assembly passed the legislation on September 24, 2026.
Titled “H.B. No. 036/OG/2026 Ogun State Safe Termination of Pregnancy Law, 2026,” the bill seeks to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality, promote safe motherhood and reproductive health rights, and establish conditions for safe pregnancy termination under specific legal indications.
The passage of the bill followed the presentation and adoption of a report by the House Committee on Health, presented by its Chairman, Hon. Wahab Haruna (APC-Yewa North II).
Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, subsequently directed that a clean copy of the bill be transmitted to Governor Abiodun for his official signature.
