Champions League trouble: Eight Leicester fans jailed in Spain

Eight Leicester City fans arrested during incidents the eve of the Champions League match against Atletico Madrid in the Spanish capital were each given four month suspended prison sentences, reports Dailymail.co.uk. The sentences came following a plea deal between their defence lawyers and the state prosecutor when they appeared in court after spending 36 hours in police custody.

After pleading guilty to charges, six of the fans were sentenced to an additional four months for assaulting police officers, according to reports from EFE.

The eight arrived in court still nursing injuries sustained during clashes with riot police in Plaza Mayor square, a popular tourist attraction in the city’s old quarter. They were warned that if they did not accept the terms agreed between the lawyers they could face a long wait in jail on remand before a full trial.

The prosecutor had originally intended to ask for at least two of those arrested to be imprisoned for up to three years if convicted of inflicting injuries. Instead the judge handed down the agreed sentence of four months, suspended for two years, to each of the eight whose names were not made public.The accused did not know one another prior to the incidents and were staying at various hotels.Trouble erupted at about 9.30pm on Tuesday, nearly a full 24 hours ahead of the Foxes’ quarter-final match with Atletico Madrid at the Vicente Calderon on Wednesday, when a Leicester supporter, who was not arrested, was seen on a video throwing a pavement cafe table. All those held had been drinking heavily, the court heard. All the accused, including a father and son, faced charges of public disorder. Two were also charged with causing minor injuries, resisting arrest and causing damage.

The remaining four also faced accusations of causing minor injuries and resisting the police.
