Obi Cubana and Kanu Nwankwo at the stadium
Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has continued to surge in popularity among celebrities and business personalities with the famous Obi Cubana joining the list of celebrity presence at an NPFL match.
Cubana, whose real name is Obinna Iyiegbu was at the Enyimba International Stadium in Aba to watch the Matchday 2 fixture between the former champions, fondly called the People’s Elephant as they ran out 1-0 winners over Niger Tornadoes.
He was in the stadium as a special guest of the Enyimba management team, led by Chairman Nwankwo Kanu and Cubana, also the chairman Odogwu bitters was warmly received by the fans, drawing loud cheers as he watched the match.
On the pitch, Enyimba FC secured a thrilling 1-0 victory over Niger Tornadoes, thanks to Joseph Abiodun’s early header in the 5th minute. The win meant that Enyimba has gone two matches unveaten with four points and plus one goal difference. On the opening day of the season, the Aba giants played out a draw with Barau FC in Kano.
Cubana said he was impressed by the performance of both teams and the turnout of fans, promising to make out time to see more NPFL matches involving Enyimba.
Cubana’s endorsement is significant coming on the heels of the showing up at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu by popular musician, Flavour. Some Nollywood actors are being spotted in different NPFL matches since the 2023/24 season, identifying with their favourite clubs.
As a prominent figure in Nigerian society, their endorsements are expected to boost the various team’s morale and attract more fans to their stadium for NPFL fixtures.
Enyimba FC’s management team expressed appreciation to Cubana for his support and said they are looking forward to working together to achieve great things.
