Amidst continuing attacks and kidnap of farmers, a security fund to equip the vigilance group in Ubulu-Uku in Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State has been launched.
The fund was launched at the annual Delegates Conference of Ubulu-Uku Kingdom Descendants Central Union held during the Christmas period.
Flagging off the exercise, the President General, Mr. Peter Udene Ugbaja, decried the rampaging attacks by militant Fulani herders who have taken over large areas of farmlands in the community. He said the inability of security agencies to contain the criminals has made it imperative for the community to pick up the gauntlet and equip the local vigilantes.
“We cannot remain helpless even if the Police is unable to address our complaints. We have to empower our vigilance group to secure our farmlands and farmers”, Ugbaja said in address attended by delegates nationwide and from the Diaspora. He urged public-spirited indigenes to join in providing logistic support to the vigilantes who, he noted, are basically engaging in a venture without pay.
On review of the community development association’s constitution, he said a committee to review the constituency headed by Pastor Daniel Malachi Utomi, national Vice President 11, has already swung into action.
“The primary objective is to further democratise the running of UDC. One of the core areas to be addressed is ensuring that our Diaspora branches are not just involved in the day-to-day running of the UDC but also in the emergence of its leadership. Voting process will be reformed to ensure that delegates from Diaspora branches and, indeed, all branches are able to vote and voted for without being physically present during elections. With the application of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), these and more can accomplished”, Ugbaja said.
On the attempt by some groups to take over the town union and its elected leadership, he said “what we have learnt from the concerted the attack on the UDC and the branches worldwide is that Ubulu-Uku has come of age.
“Unlike previous in interventions, the perpetrators came with a barely disguised agenda to unleash mayhem on our dear fatherland. Ubulu-Uku resisted them and proved that they will always stand for the truth and betterment of the Kingdom”, he said in his address.
Ugbaja announced that Anioma Microfinance Bank Limited, the bank that recently began operations I Ubulu-Uku now offer full banking services and can be accessed worldwide and called on all the people to patronise the bank.
He said the association remains committed to protecting the integrity of the traditional institution with His Royal Majesty, Obi (Barr.) Chukwuka Noah Akaeze as Agbogidi and called on the people to continue to work for the development of the community.
