The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP in the last governorship election in Edo State, Dr Asue Ighodalo, has expressed deep sadness at the passing of Major General Godwin Osagie Abbe (Rtd), a former military governor of Akwa Ibom and Rivers States, and a former Minister of Defence and Internal Affairs.

Ighodalo, in a statement by Team Asue Media Organization (TAMO) on Monday signed by Mr Erhabor Emokpae, said the state has lost an illustrious son whose legacy of service to fatherland is immeasurable.

“I am deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Maj Gen Godwin Abbe. There is no doubting the fact that Edo State has lost an Illustrious son whose legacy of service to his fatherland remains immeasurable. General Abbe’s administrative acumen, sterling qualities and professional discipline among other positives will continue to speak eloquently about his invaluable contribution to the growth and development of Nigeria as a country and Edo as a State.

“There’s no doubting the fact that Gen Abbe left when the country needs to tap from his wealth of experience and knowledge as a retired top brass in the military.”

Ighodalo recalled some of the sensitive positions Gen Abbe held during his days in the military.

“We are comforted by the fact that his enviable career in the military saw him serving as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division of the Nigerian Army and Commander of the Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC). He also served as the Minister of Defence and Internal Affairs at various times where he demonstrated outstanding leadership. And he would be remembered also for his meritorious service as military governor of Akwa Ibom and Rivers States at different times.

“We pray to the Almighty God to grant his soul a peaceful rest, and to those he left behind, the grace and fortitude to bear the irreparable loss,” Ighodalo said.
