Delta State Commissioner for Works (Rural and Riverine Roads), Mr Charles Aniagwu says Governor Sheriff Oborevwori was working assiduously to complete ongoing projects as his administration clocks 100 days in office.
Speaking on “Democracy Today” on AIT, Monday night, Aniagwu said Deltans were happy with the seamless transition recorded from the previous to the present administration.
He said that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori was working hard to deliver all ongoing projects to meet the yearnings and aspirations of Deltans.
“For us in Delta we are very lucky and happy to have a seamless transition from the last administration where a number of projects were undertaken.
“Governor Oborevwori was very much a part of the previous administration having held sway as the leader of the state’s legislature as Speaker for a period of 6 years where he was able to pass a number of critical laws that supported the many milestones recorded in the Okowa administration.
“Having seen what was done in the last administration, he came up with the M.O.R.E Agenda which means meaningful development; Opportunities for all; Realistic reforms and Enhanced peace and security.
“Flowing from the platform of the more, he has ensured that whatever was done by the previous administration he improved on it and added more.
“He has ensured that outstanding promotion arrears was cleared, earmarked a reasonable amount to meet the people halfway by way of palliatives”.
Aniagwu said some projects have been completed and ready for inauguration ahead of the Governor’s 100 days in office.
“As his administration clocks 100 days in office, Gov. Oborevwori has ensured the completion of numerous projects at Dennis Osadebay University, Asaba; University of Delta Agbor and Delta State University of Science and Technology, Ozoro.
“Other projects slated for inauguration include the High Court Complex Asaba and numerous roads across the state. Warri is being cleaned up and more projects have been approved for construction in the area”.
The Works Commissioner opined that Delta was peaceful because Governor Oborevwori had continued in the trajectory of equity and fairness in distribution of projects and appointments.
“Today, Oborevwori in his appointments is ensuring that no ethnic group, no Senatorial District, no class of individuals is left behind.
Okowa tried as much to bring the youths on board but Sheriff Oborevwori is taking it a notch higher.
“In our State Exco we now talk about youth o’clock, we have preponderance of youths in our exco because Oborevwori believed that doing so will indeed bring the youths on board as not leaders of tomorrow but leaders of today.
“So we have a number of persons appointed by Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori into critical positions who are far less than 40 years of age”.
On the poor state of Federal Roads in the state, Aniagwu welcomed the pronouncement from the Minister of Works that states can now intervene on Federal Roads but cautioned that it would have been better if the FG lived up to their obligations.
“For a very long time, Delta State Government has tried as much as possible to intervene on Federal roads in the state. It is a good news coming from the Minister of Works that states can now come in to collaborate with the Federal Government in that regard.
“We had a lot of challenge in the past administration when the Federal Government refused states from coming in even when the Federal Government was not in the position to ensure that those roads are put in motorable state.
“In Delta we are doing what we could to carry out remedial works on the roads but some of them have collapsed because they have been constructed for more than twenty years and they may have gone beyond their lifespan and needs to be totally reconstructed.
“The Agbor Eku Road is one Federal road we have intervened severally but at this point it needed total reconstruction and Gov. Oborevwori has directed that we take stock of all those failed federal roads that are impassable to ensure that no community is cut off on account of these disturbing Federal roads”.
On flooding, Aniagwu said Governor Oborevwori had directed the setting up of Flood Management Committee to mitigate the effect of the impending flood on the citizens.
He said state government had taken steps to construct storm drainages and clearing of waterways to ensure free flow of water.
On palliatives distribution, Aniagwu said that the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Kingsley Emu was heading the committee responsible for the distribution.
He said the State Government had approved the sum of N10billion for palliatives and social investments, pointing out that those saddled with the responsibility of implementation are not politically inclined to ensure that it gets to the right beneficiaries.
