A 63-year-old drug baron, three Mexican nationals, and six other Nigerians have been arraigned before the Federal High Court in Lagos following the dismantling of an industrial-scale super clandestine laboratory.
The syndicate is facing an 11-count criminal charge related to the setup of the lab and the production of 2,419.48 kilograms of methamphetamine, valued at over Four Hundred and Eighty Billion Naira (₦480,000,000,000.00) on the international market.
The Arraignment and Court Order
In a statement on Friday by the spokesperson of the NDLEA, Femi Babafemi, the 10 defendants appeared before Justice Musa Kakaki on Friday, July 10, 2026. All ten pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
Following their pleas, the prosecution team called seven witnesses to commence the trial. However, the defense team objected, requesting more time to review the proof of evidence, which they received on July 3, 2026.
Court Ruling: Justice Kakaki ordered that all defendants be remanded in the Lagos Correctional Centre. The case has been adjourned to July 16 and 22, 2026, for trial and the hearing of bail applications.
The defendants include:
Anochili Innocent (63): The alleged cartel mastermind and kingpin.
The Mexican “Meth Experts”: Juan Carlos Meza Torrero (49), Nemecio Martinez Felix (46), and Jesus López Valles (40).
Nigerian Syndicate Members: Nwankwo Sunday Christian (41), Egwuonwu Uchenna Victor (38), Igwe Abuchi Remijus (43), Ifeanyichukwu Chibuike Joshua (23), Omonughwa Kingsley Orike (45), and Nwobum Emeka (59).
The arraignment follows a series of highly coordinated raids executed by NDLEA operatives between May 16 and May 18, 2026, across Ogun and Lagos states.
May 16 (The Super Lab): Operatives stormed a hidden facility deep inside the Mowe forest, Ijebu East LGA of Ogun State. They arrested the three Mexican nationals and four Nigerian operatives (Nwankwo, Igwe, Ifeanyichukwu, and Egwuonwu).
May 16 (The Kingpin’s Arrest): Simultaneously, cartel leader Anochili Innocent was arrested at his luxury residence at No. 8 Tafawa Balewa Street, Golf Estate, Lakowe, Lekki, Lagos.
May 18 (Follow-up Operations): NDLEA agents raided another property owned by Anochili at House 70, Close 3, Mayfair Estate, Lakowe, Lekki, arresting key syndicate member Kingsley Orike Omonughwa. On the same day, investigators targeted the residence of Emeka Nwobum, which served as the cartel’s strategic stash house.
Severe Charges and Seizures
The 11-count charge filed by the NDLEA details extensive violations of the NDLEA Act, including:
Conspiracy & Production: Establishing a clandestine laboratory for processing methamphetamine, violating Section 14(b).
Cartel Financing: Managing, organizing, and financing a drug trafficking organization, contrary to Section 20(1)(g).
Illicit Transportation: Moving precursor chemicals from Lagos to Mowe using three vehicles, a Toyota Tacoma, a Mercedes Benz (APP 942 YL), and a Toyota Highlander (GWA 662DJ), contrary to Section 20(1)(f).
Chemical Seizures: Possession of massive quantities of precursor chemicals at the lab, including 358kg of toluene, 1,834kg of hydrochloric acid, and 22.5kg of acetone, alongside phenyl-2-propane (P2P) and phenyl acetic acid (Section 20(1)(e)).
Anochili Innocent faces an additional, specific charge under Section 12 of the NDLEA Act for permitting his fenced expanse of land to be used for the manufacturing of illicit narcotics.
NDLEA Reacts to Transnational Threat
Reacting to the development, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, described the operation as one of the most significant crackdowns on industrial-scale narcotics production in Nigerian history. He noted that the involvement of foreign nationals highlights a dangerous trend.
“The presence of Mexican nationals among those arrested and arraigned today speaks to the alarming reach of international drug cartels now attempting to entrench themselves in Nigeria,” Marwa stated. “But the Agency will not relent in tracking down and dismantling every such network, no matter how well concealed or well-financed.”
Marwa reaffirmed the NDLEA’s resolve to rid the country of international cartels and their local collaborators, urging citizens to continue assisting the agency with actionable intelligence.
