Twitter suspends Niger Delta Avengers’ account, group vows more attacks
New militant group, the Niger Delta Avengers, announced Tuesday that its Twitter account is under suspension. It disowned all existing accounts claiming to represent the group. The account was suspended on Monday even as the group has vowed to continue with its bombing of oil facilities activities.
The suspension may have infuriated elements of the group whom villagers in the creeks said had been making frequent movements across the waters which is usually a precursor to an attack.
The group, which issued a statement on its website, has used a Twitter account as its main form of communication to publicize claims of attacks carried out in the last few months on facilities in the Niger Delta.
No reason was adduced by Twitter for the suspension but it may not be unconnected to the frequent messages of violence being conveyed by the group via Twitter. Media reports in recent weeks have always quoted the Avengers tweets on its Twitter handle.
