Senate Bows to Pressure, Dumps Amendment of Code of Conduct Act
Unable to stand the heat the Nigerian Senate Wednesday dumped its bid to amend the Code of Conduct Act, which it initiated about a week ago, following criticisms from the civil society and the public. The amendment has gone through second reading has been criticized as self-serving, vindictive and anti-people. Just 24 hours ago Transparency International issued a press statement warning the Senate not to use dubious law-making techniques including review of existing laws to whittle the potency of the anti-graft war being waged by the Buhari government.
The amendment sought to prune the powers of the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) and the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), where Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki is being tried for allegedly failing to declare all his assets.
The trial has pitted the Senate against the CCT which days ago warned senators never to storm the sitting at the tribunal in solidarity with Saraki.
Senator Ben Bruce confirmed the development in several tweets Wednesday.
