Rescuers battle to save lives as scores trapped in 21-story collapsed building
November 1, 2021
Rescuers are still working their socks off on Monday evening to rescue scores trapped in a collapsed 21-storey building on Gerrard Road in highbrow Ikoyi in Lagos.
Witnesses recall that the building had been long in construction with some persons conjecturing it may have been caused by low quality materials.
Most of the persons trapped in the rubble were workers at the gigantic site. Some persons say the owner of the building who was visiting the site was among people trapped.
Professional rescue operations could not commence immediately but passers-by tried to offer help with limited success as they lacked the requisite skills and tools.
The building located at 20, Gerrard Road, collapsed shortly before 3 p.m. on Monday.
Distress calls triggered emergency response with Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, also visiting the scene.
Channels Television had reported the rescue of at least four persons.
Officials of the Emergency Management Agency are currently at the scene helping with rescue operations.
Lagos has witnessed many collapsed building episodes in recent years.
