Reps urge FG to provide support for family of slain Yobe cleric
September 27, 2022
The House of Representatives, has urged the Federal Government to provide support to the family of the slain Yobe Cleric, Mr Goni Aisami pending the outcome of the case in court.
The call was sequel to the unanimous adoption of a motion by Rep. Zacharia Galadima (APC-Yobe) at Tuesday’s plenary.
Presenting the motion, Galadima said that the late Gashua based Islamic scholar was travelling in his car from Kano to Gashua when the incident happened in August.
He said that the cleric got to a suspected illegal checkpoint and was stopped by a soldier, Mr John Gabriel, who shot him dead with the aim of rubbing him of his car.
Galadima prayed the house to condemn the killing of the cleric, while the federal government and Nigerian Army should compensate the deceased family.
Majority Leader Ado Doguwa (APC-Kano), urged the house to discountenance the motion, saying that the matter was in court and the prayers could be prejudicial.
He said that the suspect and his accomplices have been court marshaled and the matter was before a competent court of justification for determination.
Doguwa said that any decision taken by the house could be against the final decision of the court.
Minority Leader Ndudi Elumelu (PDP-Delta) however, said that in the interim, the government should assist the family, pending the outcome of the case.
In his ruling, Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila mandated that the earlier prayers should be deleted. (NAN)
