The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom says it will monitor the performances of the newly elected Council Chairmen and Councillors and evaluate them on the basis of the party’s template.
The Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr Ini Ememobong made the remark in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Uyo on Sunday.
He said the measure was aimed at ensuring that the elected office holders at the grassroots deliver dividends of democracy to the people.
Ememobong said that the party has set a minimum standard of performance for all council chairmen and expressed the hope that they would not perform below that minimum standard.
“As a party, we have what is called ‘irreducible minimum’, that at the end of the three year tenure of council chairmen, you should not perform below expectation.
“Election has come and gone, what Akwa Ibom people require from elected chairmen and councillors is for them to work and improve on the lives of the people”.
“ They are not expecting too much; let me tell you the Nigerian electorate is very easy to satisfy.
“ All they need is potable water, good roads, electricity, good health facilities and education for their children.
“All the Nigerian electorate need from political office holders is security and food on their table.”Ememobong said.
The PDP spokesperson noted that local government is the closest tier to the people, saying it is imperative for that elected officials to work hard and impact on the people at grassroots.
In a related development, the publicity secretary dismissed the fears being expressed in certain quarters that the return of former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar and other defectors to the PDP would distabilise the party, saying it would rather strengthen it.
According to him, the policies of the present government at the centre have only helped Nigerians to draw the line between PDP and the governing All Progressives Congress( APC).
