#OsunDecides2022: Adeleke is Governor-elect – INEC declares
Senator Ademola Adeleke, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the Osun governorship election has officially been declared winner and Governor-elect, claiming victory in 17 local governments to beat incumbent Governor, Gboyega Oyetola who won in 13 LGAs. He polled 403,371 votes while Oyetola got 375,027 votes.
Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, the Vice chancellor of the University of Lagos who is the chief returning officer in the election announced Adeleke as validly elected.
The victory has thrown the state into jubilation and it drew tears from both Adeleke and his cousin Davido, the iconic musician, who campaigned actively for Senator Adeleke. Both were captured in a viral video shedding tears of joy.
Adeleke ahead of the election had sounded confident of victory, claiming he was the rightful winner in the 2018 election but was robbed by judicial pronouncement.
During the debate, the Senator was rated as one of the best performers and he kept stressing that he would win the election on account of his popularity.
“My people love me and I love my people,” he stressed.
Saturday’s election was largely peaceful with security personnel showing professionalism.
It was however marked by incidents of vote-buying which election monitors linked to the two frontrunners in the election, APC and PDP.
