NGO to harness children’s curiosity to raise women productive with ICT

The Women Technology Empowerment Centre (W-TEC) is set to harness children’s innate curiosity on technology in an effort to raise the number of women working productively with ICT.
The W-TEC Communications Officer, Mr Yemi Odutola, gave the assurance in a statement in Lagos on Wednesday.
According to him, W.TEC’s 2018 `She Creates’ Camp and `Early Innovators Technology Camp’ will be avenues for the centre to harness the inquisitiveness of children from ages five to 10.
Odutola said that the centre was calling for applications from suitable candidates for the camps which would take place in Lagos and Anambra states from July to September.
“ She Creates Camp is a two-week technology programme, which empowers girls to contribute meaningfully to the digital economy and improves their economic opportunities.
“The long-term goal of the camp is to increase the number of women using information technology productively for professional and leadership activities.
“The Early Innovators Camp harnesses the innate curiousity of children aged 5 to 10 years, by introducing them to computing and science concepts through play and exploration over a two-week camp,” he said.
According to the official, the girls will participate in technology workshops and leadership activities.
He said that evaluations of previous camps showed enhanced leadership skills, creativity, problem-solving and communication abilities among the participants.
The communications officer said that W-TEC would host She Creates Camp on Lagos Mainland from Aug. 5 to Aug. 18, adding that the organisation would hold the camp on the Lekki axis from July 23 to Aug. 3.
He said that the camp would take place in Awka from Aug. 20 to Sept. 1.
According to him, Early Innovators Camp will takes place on Lagos Mainland from Aug 6 to Aug. 17.
He said that the camps would entail technology workshops on animation.
He said that interested participants should complete an online form or contact camp@wtec.org.ng.
The official said that the target audience for She Creates – dedicated for girls – would be smart and curious girls of 13 years to 17 years with interest in using computers and exploring digital technology.
He said that Early Innovators Camp, a tech camp for children – would target children from ages five to 10 years.
