NBC directs all social media platforms, online broadcasters to obtain operating license

The National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, has directed all Online Broadcast Service Providers and Social Media Platforms operating within the country to apply and obtain a broadcast license to operate.

This was contained in an advertorial published by the Commission and signed by its Director General Armstrong Idachaba.

The advertorial reads in full:

“In line with the provision of the National Broadcasting Act CAP N11 Laws of the Federation 2004, Section 2(1)(b)(i), which states that:

The Commission shall have the responsibility of receiving, processing and considering applications for the establishment, ownership or operation of Radio and Television Stations including Cable Television services, Direct Satellite Broadcast (DSB), and ANY medium of Broadcasting.

The National Broadcasting Commission hereby directs every online Broadcast Service Providers and Social Media Platforms operating within the Nigerian State to apply and Obtain a broadcast licence for their services”.

The application is expected to be sent to the office of the Director-General while the commission states further that any online Broadcast Service Provider that fails to obtain a license will be considered an illegal entity.
