The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has commended the Federal Government’s directive that no Federal university should charge tuition fees.
The Spokesman of NANS, Mr Bestman Okereafor, said in a statement in Enugu on Friday that the association received with joy the Federal Government’s position.
Okereafor said that many students were finding it difficult to pay tuition fees.
“NANS considers the position of the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Anthony Anwuka, as a progressive-minded one.
“We salute the Federal Executive Council for listening to our demand for an affordable education for students.
“NANS is, however, calling on the Federal Government to extend this gesture to Federal polytechnics and colleges of education,’’ he said.
Okereafor said that the Federal Government should consolidate its position by shutting down any university that flouted the directive.
According to him, NANS is calling on state governments to implement the same directive in state universities for the benefit of more Nigerian students.
He urged university councils and managements to desist from fixing fees that most students could not afford.
