‘Lawyer’ seen beating wife in viral video: Nigerians call for probe
It took the intervention of concerned neighbours to prevail on an Uyo-based lawyer, Ekere Ebong, from assaulting his wife at their home, a trending video on the incident has revealed.
The trending video has triggered reactions on social media with both lawyers and non-lawyers calling for full scale investigation.
Some lawyers said if proven that the man is a lawyer, he should be banned from practicing and debarred from the list of lawyers in Nigeria as a deterrent to others. They called on the police to fish out, arrest and prosecute the wife beater.
“In the US and other places that I know, such a brute will have his licence withdrawn immediately”, a lawyer wrote on Facebook.
The incident was said to have occurred last week, according to residents in the neighbourhood said it has become a pattern for the senior lawyer to assault the wife almost on daily basis.
One of the neighbours was heard in the video narrating how the lawyer has consistently beaten his wife for years. “I have lived in this compound for the past four years and every time this man has been beating the woman for more than four years,” the neighbor said.
The traumatized wife who was seen in the video bleeding and half clad was sobbing with blood dripping from her mouth. She could not respond to questions asked of her by the neighbours one of whom who said he thought it was a case of armed robbery when he heard the noise from the beating.
Even when a neighbor tried to shelter Ebong’s wife, he threatened further violence against her if she ever dared to sleep outside their home.
Ebong is said to be a member of the Nigerian Bar Association, Uyo branch.
