Lagos to get two new State Universities soon as LASPOTECH emerges 3rd best Poly in Nigeria
Aug. 24, 2021
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babjide Sanwo-Olu has been commended for his administration’s commitment to delivering quality education across the State.
The commendation, according to Special Adviser to Governor Sanwo-Olu on Education, Barrister Tokunbo Wahab, came as Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH) Ikorodu, emerged third-best Polytechnic in Nigeria during the year 2021 Webometric latest ranking for Polytechnic and Colleges of Technologies in Nigeria.
He explained that the report, recently released by the Webometric, listed Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech), Federal Polytechnic Ilaro and the Lagos State Polytechnic, Ikorodu, as first, second and third best polytechnics respectively among the 50 ranked institutions in the country.
The Special Adviser expressed happiness that LASPOTECH is bouncing back to its rightful place, noting that the State Government’s general reform of the education sector has continued to yield positive results.
Wahab recalled that last year the Lagos State University (LASU) was also rated as the second-best university in Nigeria and one of the best 100 Universities in the world.
While revealing that two new State Universities would soon be created by the State Government, Wahab noted that LASU alone could not meet the demand for University admission by students in an emerging Smart City like Lagos with an estimated population of over 22 million people.
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary, Office of the Special Adviser on Education, Mr. Adeniran Kasali said the emergence of LASPOTECH lends credence to the efforts of the government in the Education and Technology pillar of the T.H.E.M.E.S Agenda, adding that more laurels will be achieved in other critical sectors.
He, therefore, commended the State Government for promoting the growth of education in the State, stressing that initiation and implementation of well-conceived policies is having a positive impact on the education sector.
The Rector of LASPOTECH, Dr. Nurudeen Olaleye, expressed happiness about the institution’s new ranking and commended the State Government for upgrading facilities in the school, asserting that the Management, Staff and Students of the Polytechnic have resolved to dedicate the achievement to the State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, whom he described as the architect of the glory.
Webometric ranking of the World Universities/Institutions is the initiative of the Cybermetrics Lab, a research group belonging to the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas (CSIC), the largest Public Research body in Spain.
