Insecurity: Buhari meets with Service Chiefs; more Tucano jets arrive next week
September 7, 2021
After a three-hour security briefing from the nation’s top security chiefs, President Muhammadu Buhari directed them to find new tactics to insecurity in the country, particularly in the North-West and North Central.
The President met with Service Chiefs at the Presidential Villa in Abuja and it was obvious he was not pleased with the lingering challenge of insecurity across the country.
The President was said to have reaffirmed the urgent need to deal with the bandits, who according to the security chiefs, are becoming a nuisance, killing and making reckless pronouncements to solicit attention.
After the meeting, Minister of Defense, General Bashir Magashi, told State House correspondents that the government reviewed the situation in the country and concluded that it can resolve the security challenges.
He said Zamfara State and the North Central, dominated discussion at the meeting.
Part of the briefing was a disclosure by Magashi than an additional batch of A-29 Super Tucano Jets will arrive in the country next week. He also said the jets delivered in the first batch are currently being test run.
The security meeting was chaired by the President with the service chiefs physically in attendance.
The Service Chiefs were led by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor; Minister of Defence, General Bashir Magashi (rtd).
Also in attendance were Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba; Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola; Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Abubakar Malami; and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama.
The last security meeting was held on August 19 shortly after the return of President Buhari from a medical trip to London.
