Hundreds of Syrian refugees return home from Lebanon – Report
Hundreds of Syrian refugees returned home from Lebanon on Thursday under the supervision of the Lebanese General Security, National News Agency (NNA) report says.
Ola Boutros, Advisor to the Foreign Affairs Minister, said that the Lebanese-Russian joint committee had been working hard to remove obstacles for refugees to return home.
According to NNA, refugees from Shabaa, Arqoub, Saida and Akkar gathered at meeting points, where buses transported them along with their furniture and personal belongings.
“Refugees thanked the Lebanese General Security for its efforts in facilitating their voluntary return to their country,” report said.
More than one million Syrian refugees are registered with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Lebanon, while the government estimates the true number of Syrians in the country at 1.5 million.
To facilitate the return of Syrian refugees to their homeland, Russia drafted a strategy, which aims at securing the return of 890,000 refugees to Syria, and presented it to the Lebanese authorities.
