How Deputy Speaker’s legislative aide died in National Assembly after Clinic refused him treatment
A Senior Legislative Assistant with the National Assembly (NASS), Mr Abubakar Doki on Monday collapsed and died in the National Assembly premises. The deceased in his 50’s slumped and died after the National Assembly clinic declined to treat him on the ground that his undisclosed ailment was beyond its capacity. He was advised to seek treatment outside the clinic but slumped and died shortly afterwards while still on the premises of NASS.
The late Doki was driven to the office by his son after he allegedly took ill in the early hours of Monday. Shocked NASS staff said the death was avoidable because if the NASS clinic was well equipped, he would not need to get help outside.
“These are the things some of us are saying; the clinic should be equipped because of the number of people within the NASS complex. It should be a functional hospital that should be able to handle cases from outside. I do not think it is a case of no money, I think it is a matter of misplaced priority”, a distraught staff of NASS who pleaded not to be named told our reporter.
Another angry staff fumed: “ no matter how critical his case may have been, the clinic should have been equipped to the extent that it should be able to stabilize patients before referrals. This is unacceptable”.
He was until his death, a Senior Legislative Aide (SLA) attached to the office of the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yussuf Lasun.
The late Mr. Doki, hailed Bungudu in Zamfara State.
