The Plateau Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has recruited 250 special marshals to complement its work in the state.
The FRSC Sector Commander in the state, Mrs Pat Emeordi, made this known at a four-day training organised for the newly enlisted special marshals on Thursday in Jos.
According to her, the newly enlisted special marshals, who were carefully selected, were men and women of proven integrity.
She explained that the role of the special marshals in ensuring safety of lives and properties on highways was important.
“FRSC is built on a tripod; we have the regular marshals who wear uniform and are paid salaries, the road safety clubs and the special marshals, who are basically volunteers.
“These are men and women of proven integrity carefully screened and seen to be worthy ambassadors that will aid us in carrying out statute mandate of safeguarding lives on the roads.
“So, we have recruited and commenced training of these 250 men and women, believing that they will aid in spreading road safety campaigns in Plateau, ” she said.
Emeordi said the special marshals would be trained and schooled on the basic functions of the Corps.
She also said the training was timely, as they would form part of the team that would carry out the 2017 ember months campaign.
The sector commander urged the special marshals to commit their intellects, time and financial resources to support activities that would lead to safety on highways.
She, however, warned against extortion and other corrupt acts that would dent the image of the Corps.
