Fear as Unknown Gunmen Kill Four Policemen in Delta State
The news of last Thursday daylight murder of four Policemen in the Delta State University town of Oghara, has caused a serious pandemonium and tension in the community.
Sources at the Delta State Police command hinted our Correspondent that policemen were seen in groups discussing what could be described as painful loss of their colleagues.
A top Police source at the command reliably informed our Correspondent that the four policemen met their untimely death while on patrol duty in Oghara. He added that the hoodlums allegedly opened fire on them along the road before escaping into the nearby bush.
It was gathered that the corpses of the murdered policemen were deposited at the mortuary of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba a few minutes after their murder.
The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Celestina Kalu, however denied that four policemen were killed, saying that it was only one policeman who dove the patrol vehicle that was allegedly killed by the hoodlums. He also confirmed that Policemen actually had encounter with some hoodlums.
The Police spokesperson could not confirm or deny whether the killings were connected with the last weekend’s killing of three suspected kidnappers by the police during an exchange of fire at Okuokoko, Okpe Local Government Area (LGA) of the State, after an alleged kidnap of one Paaga Blessing Emabari.
Recall that unidentified gunmen, in the wee hours of Wednesday allegedly abducted the three-year-old son of an accountant at the Delta State University Teaching Hospital, DELSUTH, Oghara in Ethiope West Local Government Area (LGA) of Delta State.
It was gathered that the gunmen numbering over five, stormed the old Benin Road residence of the accountant identified as Peter Nwabueze, robbed him and his neighbours of cash and other valuable items before abducting his three-year old son.
Confirming the incident, a staff of the hospital who, spoke on anonymity to the Police, stated that Peter Nwabueze is the head of the Revenue unit of the hospital while his wife, is a nurse at the Renal Unit.
The spate of kidnapping at Oghara, which also plays host to the headquarters of the Nigerian Navy Logistics Command and the Western Delta University, has been on the increase thereby making staff of DELSUTH flee the community in their droves to reside in other adjourning communities where they come to work from.
