By-elections: Low voter turnout in Enugu, Lagos, materials arrive early
Very few voters have turned out on Saturday for accreditation and voting in the rerun election holding in Udenu and Igboeze local government areas of Enugu State.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that following the accreditation of the few voters that turned up and the early arrival of election materials, voting commenced at Orba polling units 1 and 11.
Election materials have been distributed to various polling units from the Igboeze North headquarters at Ogrute, Enugu Ezike in the presence of heavy security.
NAN also reports that security personnel have positioned themselves in strategic locations in the area to ensure the maintenance of law and order for peaceful voting.
Obviously, the presence of the law enforcement agents in the area has had a positive effect as voting is going on peacefully.
Th youth leader of Ozzi community, Mr Hillary Azegba, who spoke with NAN said there was calm everywhere.
“I am in my ward – Ozzi ward 7. Everything is calm here, ” he said.
Meanwhile, in the by-election in Surulere 1 Federal Constituency of Lagos State, election materials arrived early but there low turn out of voters in the early morning hours.
INEC officials were seen at polling units as early as 7 30 a.m., with voting starting almost simultaneously at the polling units at 8.a.m.
Reporters monitoring the election observed low turn out of voters as at the time of filing the report.
At the voting unit of the Chief of Staff to the President, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, voting began at 8.30 a.m.
Accreditation and voting simultaneously began at 8.30 a.m. at Polling Unit 014, Ward G3, at Elizabeth Fowler Memorial Primary School, Surulere and voters were seen exercising their civic duty. Voting materials arrived at the polling unit at 7.38 a.m.
Voting for the House of Representatives by-election for Surulere constituency 1, Polling Unit 30A, at State Junior Grammar School (Special), Itolo Street, Eric Moore, Surulere, started at 8.00 a.m, as INEC agents arrived on time to set up the unit.
The unit, which is the venue where the former governor of Lagos state, Mr Babatunde Fashola is expected to vote, saw voters trickling in. NAN
