Crimes thrive because of failure of the church, parents, teachers – Gov. Emmanuel
December 19, 2021
Gov. Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom has linked crimes and vices in the society to failure of the church, parents and teachers to instill discipline in children.
He implored parents, teachers and clerics to reinstitute basic moral values at the family level in order to check the upsurge of vices in the society.
Emmanuel gave the advice on Saturday at the funeral ceremony in honour of Elder Okon Umoren in Onna Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom.
“It is a good thing to have children, but this should also be a lesson that whoever has children should raise them well because you never know how your last days will be.
“The problem the government is facing today is because of the failure of the church, teachers and parents.
“These are the three pillars that used to shape the children before sending them out to the larger society, but in all, charity begins at home.
“If parents are diligent in raising children, the vices we have in today’s society will be greatly reduced,” he pointed out.
Emmanuel said the church, teachers and parents have the responsibility of moulding children into valuable citizens.
He attributed the glorious exit and honour done the deceased to the meticulous investments in his children.
The governor acknowledged death as an inevitable end for every man and tasked parents to invest valuably in their children to amass honour for their latter days.
He stressed that the latter had the most fundamental duty as the family remained a child’s first place of learning.
The governor, an in-law to the deceased, appreciated everyone who joined the family to give the late Elder Umoren a befitting farewell.
Earlier, Bishop Uduakobong Akpan of Eket Diocese of the Methodist Church, Nigeria, in his homily, taken from Psalm 90:12, said it was unwise for any man to live without considering what his life at the moment meant to other men and to God.
He admonished Christians to apply wisdom in whatever they do and live their lives with the consciousness of having to render an account of their stewardship to God at a time that they cannot determine. (NAN)
