Buhari condemns Kano blasphemy killing, promises justice
President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday promised that those involved in the case of an Igbo market woman, Mrs. Bridget Agbahime, who was killed in Kano for allegedly blaspheming Prophet Mohammed would be brought to book.
Mrs. Agbamihe, a trader, was allegedly clobbered to death by a mob after a tiff with another trader who accused her of blasphemy.
He described the incident as “sad and regrettable”, even as he condoled with the husband of the deceased, Pastor Mike Agbahime, the family and relations.
Buhari’s message was contained in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina.
He commended the police and Kano State government for timely arresting the situation and bringing the mob under control.
The statement read inter alia:
“The president assured that justice would be done in the matter, and urged the people not to take the law into their hands.
“He charged those who might want to use the development to fan the embers of religious or ethnic hatred to remember that two wrongs never make a right.
“When law and order breaks down, those who become victims are never distinguished on the basis of religion or ethnicity.
“Let us ensure that we keep the peace, as justice will be done. Let us learn to respect each other’s faith, so that we can know each other and live together in peace’’, the President said in the statement.
