Breaking News: INEC Cancels Southern Ijaw LG Polls, Cites Violence, New Date to Be Announced, Dickson in Clear Lead,
The Independent National Electoral Commission has cancelled Saturday’s Bayelsa State governorship election in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area which has remained a theatre of violence since Saturday. Southern Ijaw is the remaining local government out of the state’s eight local governments.
Dickson has won in six of the seven local governments whose results had been declared. The election in Southern Ijaw has precipitated into full violence forcing inhabitants of the area to flee to safer havens in the state. Some electoral officers were abducted, voters chased out of polling units and other electoral officers were assaulted.
INEC kept sealed lips but a source said a formal announcement would be made later today proclaiming the inconclusiveness of the election and a new date for the Southern Ijaw election.
Governor Seriake Dickson has a clear lead in the election, according to results announced so far by INEC.
