Bloody Christmas as Nnewi Gas Explosion Claims 60 Lives
The liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) otherwise known as cooking gas Plants of the Inter Corp Oil Limited, a subsidiary of Chicason Group in Nnewi, Anambra state on Thursday morning exploded killing at least 60 persons.
LPG is easier to use, cooks faster and is generally considered environment friendly making it the first choice for cooking in most homes in towns, cities and urban centres of the country.
The incident according to witnesses occurred about 11am on Thursday morning when one of the trucks belonging to the company exploded. The truck was said to be discharging gas at a prime moment when the gas station was brimming with customers. The fire that followed the explosion burnt the victims beyond recognition. The victims were mainly customers who came to refill their gas cylinders.
The charred bodies of the victims have been deposited at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital in Nnewi, Anambra State.
