Aug 1 protest: Jigawa Govt prosecutes 403 arrested persons

The Jigawa Government has prosecuted 403 persons arrested in connection with the Aug. 1 nationwide protest against #EndBadGovernance in Nigeria in the state.

Mr Bello Abdulkadir-Fanini, state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Bello made this known while speaking with newsmen, in Dutse on Monday.

Abdulkadir-Fanini said that the suspects were sentenced to various community services, while others with criminal cases were admitted to bail as investigation was still ongoing into their respective cases.

He explained that as at mid September there was no single person arrested in connection with the protest in detention in the state.

“In the period under review, that is September 1, 2024 to date, the ministry has recorded tremendous success in the discharge of its mandate through its core departments.

“The public prosecution department has successfully prosecuted 403 persons arrested in connection with the August 1, 2024 riot in Jigawa State.

“As at mid September, there was not a single person in detention,” he said.

According to him, the department was also able to successfully filed processes and prosecution, as the case may be of the six and four Appeal cases at the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court respectively.

This, Abdulkadir-Fanini said was in addition to the handling of dozens of cases to a near completion stage at the 12 High Courts of the state.

He added that under the department of civil litigation, the ministry had successfully handed two pre-election cases against the Jigawa State Independent Electoral Commission (JISIEC), prior to the just concluded local government election, held on Oct. 5.

“Under the civil litigation department, we were also able to successfully filed processes in defense of a Federal High Court Abuja case of Ikechukwu Dalfas vs Jigawa State Government, over palliative shop,” he added.

The commissioner further stated that the legal drafting department of the ministry was also able to draft and vet the Jigawa State Electricity Bill and the Hisbah Board, well as review the Jigawa (State and Local Government Contributory Pension Scheme Law.

The government also vetted the Local Government Establishment Law, and several contract agreements entered by the state government, notable among were agreements for the purchase of Khadija University Majia and the purchase of farm mechanisation equipments.

According to him, on citizens’ right, the ministry has within the period under review received and handled 63 complaints, which were mostly resolved through mediation.

Abdulkadir-Fanini added that some of the complaints under the citizens’ right that needed to be prosecuted were referred to the public prosecution department for further action, while those that involved complaints against judicial officers were referred to the Judicial Service Commission for necessary action.

The commissioner, who acknowledged capacity building as one of the major challenges faced by the staff of the ministry, assured them of adequate trainings, particularly on Information and Communication Technology (ICT). (NAN)
