Anambra stampede: CP visits hospital, confirms 22 dead
The Police Command in Anambra has confirmed 22 deaths in Saturday’s stampede at the scene of palliatives distribution in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area.
The death occurred during palliative distribution organised by a philanthropist in the area. Witnesses said the stampede was triggered by a huge crowd that overwhelmed those engaged for protocol.
Police spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, who gave an update on the stampede in a statement on Sunday in Onitsha, said that the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Itam, visited the hospital where the injured victims of the stampede were receiving treatment.
He said that Commissioner sympathised with the families and friends of the deceased, while wishing those injured quick recovery.
SP Ikenga also confirmed that investigation into the incident was ongoing, adding that the command remains dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of the people during and after the festive period.
