Amuwo Odofin Voters Decry Difficulty in Locating Polling Units, Disenfranchisement
Some voters in Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State have decried being disenfranchised for not being able to locate their polling units.
According to them the polling unit numbers should have been pasted close to each centre for easy access.
Speaking to Political Economist magazine, Mr. James said he was disappointed because he had been up and out very early and could not locate his polling unit. “I think INEC should make it easier for voters to locate polling units even a day before. I am tired of working around so I’m going home”, he said.
The turnout of voters may not have been encouraging in some of the polling units compared to the number of registered voters. This was attributed to the skepticism by some voters who believe “our votes will not count” another voter noted.
The issue of malfunctioning card readers and late arrival of both materials and officials contributed to the slow pace of the process.
Voters however commended INEC on the aspect of accreditation and voting taking place simultaneously. Some of the voters said this has helped the process and reduced the stress on voters who would have to go and come back to cast their ballot.
“We hope that INEC will come up with more of such innovations and ideas to ease the stress of voters”, Okechukwu said.
Amuwo Odofin is one of the LGAs the All Progressives Congress is yet to have a stronghold. In the 2015 elections the APC lost legislative seats to the People’s Democratic party, PDP.
It would be recalled that the National leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Tinubu had a meeting with party faithfuls in Amuwo Odofin, Ajeromi Ifelodun, Surulere and Ojo appealing to the Igbos to vote the APC.
