The Nigerian Army has debunked allegations that some of its personnel will be aiding and supporting some political parties.

This was contained in a statement by the Acting Army Spokesman, Colonel Sagir Musa on Monday.

According to the statement, the army said it has made it sufficiently and consistently clear that none of its personnel will be involved in political campaigns, escort of VIPs for political missions and above all, aiding or supporting any political party as has been circulated in noticeable media platforms.

“The need to further make the position of the NA clearer is therefore imperative. Our Rules of Engagement and Code of Conduct have not assigned any political role to the NA in this regard.”

The army further noted that any insinuation or assertion against its declaration is mischievous and politically motivated.

It however strongly and severally warned against such insinuations saying, “NA’s involvement starts and ends with the provision of peaceful and secured environment for the conduct of 2019 General Elections”.

It would be recalled that Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State had accused the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, of plotting to use his allies in the military and police to disrupt the peaceful conduct of the general elections starting on Saturday in the state.

According to Wike, “Credible intelligence has linked Rotimi Amaechi and his cohorts in the factionalised APC with plans to prevent the peaceful conduct of the general elections in Rivers State with the support of some unpatriotic military and police officers”.
