Armed Robbers Write Lagos Communities, Demand N30m Cash Each
Residents of Ajao Estate on Airport Road, Lekki Phase 1 and Ikosi GRA, all in Lagos, could not have been sleeping with their two eyes closed since they received a letter from suspected armed robbers, who advised them to organize the sum of N30Million and keep for them.
The letter dated June 30th is also unsigned. It was pasted at the gates of private homes of three residents of the affected communities.
Speaking to our Correspondent, a resident of one the affected communities, Lekki Phase 1, Adeyinka Adejumoke, a retired civil servant with the Lagos State civil service, stated that the letter was pasted at the gate of the chairman residents association of the area. “It was pasted it at the gate of our Chairman, but the Chairman is out of the country, so the security man brought it to me.”
“They are asking us to put together the sum of N30million for them. They said they would attack us any time between June and August this year. As I talk to you now, my younger brother residing at Ikosi GRA, had earlier called me this morning to inform me that they also received similar letter.”
About 20 copies of the letter were allegedly picked up also from streets in the panic-stricken communities. It was gathered that the letter was on an A4 paper. “Our people called the attention of landlords to the document, and the landlords association has made a formal report of the matter to the Police at Lekki Police Station. We have also officially petitioned the Lagos State Commissioner of Police (CP) Fatai Owoseni, to come to our rescue,” he stated.
Part of the letter read, “be prepared, be prepared, be prepared. Our dues must be paid on or before August 2015. Nobody can stop us as we can strike at any time. Only enough money can save your life. To be forewarned is to be fore-armed. We have warned you in this area, and if you have ears, you ought to hear.”
Speaking with our Correspondent, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Lagos State Police Command, Kenneth Nwosu, who confirmed the development, added that there was no cause for alarm. “I can assure you that we are in charge. Resident of the affected areas and indeed entire Lagos residents should relax because Police is in charge. We are on top of the situation.”
