Nigerians, noted for their voluble appetite for good football, have picked holes in the Super Eagles squad after they lost 1-2 to England at Wembley on Saturday describing the team as above average but not sharp enough for the World Cup.

Frank Ilaboya,  Chairman of the Edo State Football Association has urged Nigerians not to be discouraged over the country’s defeat to England at a friendly match played at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.

Ilaboya told NAN that the outcome of the encounter  was not a bad result,  adding that fans should  be more concerned about the team’s quality of play in Russia.

“We all know friendly games are test matches,  so I believe we did not do badly against England.

“I so much believe in the team and the ability of the  players,  individually they may not be skillful as the 1994 squad but they play as a team,” he said.

He urged the Super Eagles handler, Gehrot Rohr, tor block  all loopholes in the team before the kick-off of the Mundial.

Bright Omokaro,  an ex-international, said that the team performed fairly against the 3 Lions of England.

Omokaro said that the coach needed to work on all the  technical lapses in the team.

“We play fairly but the coach still have a lot of technical work to do in the team,  there is no cohesion among the players.

“All these errors should be rectified  and the players should also justify themselves by playing well, “he said.

Fans at a viewing centre in Surulere, Lagos told Political Economist that they were not impressed by the performance of the Super Eagles whom they said respected England “too much” and it affected their play in the first half.

“We played with fear and over respect for England”, some of them said as they voiced their anger at the Eagles’ shabby display. They pointed out Alex Iwobi as the best Nigerian player on the field.

It was a match which provided some clues as to how coach Gareth Southgate will line up his still experimental side when the World Cup gets underway in two weeks’ time.

First-half goals from Gary Cahill and captain Harry Kane helped England to victory in their penultimate warm-up match before taking on Tunisia, Panama and Belgium in Group G in Russia.

But the game represented little as a true test for England who benefited from a string of first-half errors by Nigeria.

The Africans, who also head to Russia, pulled a goal back shortly after the break through Alex Iwobi but only fleetingly threatened the hosts for much of the game.

Southgate has yet to settle on his preferred starting team and fielded Jesse Lingard alongside fellow attacking midfielder Dele Alli on Saturday.

It provided England with pace and creativity that led to a string of first-half chances.

Wing backs Kieran Trippier and Ashley Young added to England’s attacking power.

With Jordan Henderson rested after his appearance for Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League final a week earlier, Eric Dier looked confident as the holding player in midfield.

Southgate will take comfort from the performance of Cahill whose powerfully-headed goal from a corner kick after seven minutes will strengthen his claim for a place in the heart of defence.

The Three Lions took control of the game in the 39th minute.

That was when Kane drilled a shot from the edge of the penalty area and Nigeria goalkeeper Francis Uzoho allowed it to squeeze past him.

The Super Eagles will need to improve when they take on Croatia, Iceland and Argentina in Group D in Russia.

England are due to finish their preparations for the World Cup with a friendly against Costa Rica in Leeds on June Thursday.

Nigeria on their part play the Czech Republic in a friendly on Wednesday.
