Cardiff City were promoted to the English Premier League after a goalless draw against Reading on Sunday secured them second place in England’s second tier Championship. The feat happened on a day another struggling Premiership side Huddersfield held off champions Manchester City at the Ettihad stadium to keep hope alive of staying up the Premier league in their first season.

Cardiff finished with 90 points, two points ahead of third-placed Fulham, who suffered a shock 3-1 defeat at Birmingham City on the final day of the campaign.

Cardiff re-entered the top-flight for the first time since the 2013-14 season.

It was the fourth time Cardiff manager, Neil Warnock, has taken a club up to the top flight, having previously done so with Notts County, Sheffield United and QPR.

While the 69-year-old has experienced other promotions with County, Huddersfield, Plymouth and Scarborough, with whom he won the Football Conference in 1987.

The achievement sees him become the manager with most promotions in English football, surpassing Dave Bassett, Graham Taylor and Jim Smith – who all have seven.

The packed Cardiff City stadium broke out into a huge cheer 15 minutes in as news filtered through of Birmingham’s opener against Fulham.

Junior Hoilett then threatened to take the roof off with a curling effort but the ball dropped just the wrong side of the post, much to the crowd’s dismay.
