FG Reinstates 16,000 Resident Doctors
The Federal Government Friday ordered that all the sacked 16,000 resident doctors in the country be reinstated with immediate effect. It would be recalled that the Federal Government on August 13 sacked the doctors for embarking on a strike action and refusing to accede to the entreaties of the government. Their reinstatement was without conditionality.
Announcing the recall of the resident doctors, the Minister of Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu, through his spokesperson, Dan Nwomeh, tweeted that the doctors had been reinstated with effect from Thursday.
The resident doctors had called off their over one month strike in the wake of the Ebola outbreak after no fewer than five persons had died of the dreaded disease. However, even as the doctors called of the strike, management of some hospitals still barred them from performing their job. Nwomeh further said the Federal Government also lifted the suspension of the Residency Training Programme in all federal hospitals.
His statement directed all the Chief Medical Directors and Medical Directors of training centres to re-issue letters of reinstatement to the resident doctors.
