Lagos heart of Nigeria economic transition – Sanwo-Olu

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has declared that Lagos is the heart of Nigeria’s transition.

This is as the nation pursues a future where the economy is driven not solely by resource extraction but by technological innovation, industrial capacity, and a well-educated and equipped workforce.

Governor Sanwo-Olu stated this at the maiden Nigeria-Italy Investment Forum organised by NITA Engineering and Solutions and Advanced Global Solutions (AGS) in Lagos recently.

Represented by the Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade & Investment (MCCTI), Folashade Ambrose-Medebem, the Governor described the forum, supported by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Italy and Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as having the potential to deepen economic ties between Nigeria and Italy, and advanced shared commitment to a diversified and robust economy.

His words: “As we navigate a global economy that demands resilience, innovation, and collaboration, the opportunity to align our economic goals with the expertise and investment interests of Italy’s private sector holds transformative potential. Italy is recognised globally for its excellence in manufacturing, engineering, and industrial solutions – areas where Nigeria can benefit greatly, especially as we continue to diversify beyond our traditional economic base.

“The Forum’s objectives resonate deeply with the Lagos State Government’s vision. We are pursuing a future where our economy is driven not solely by resource extraction but by technological innovation, industrial capacity, and a well-educated and equipped workforce.

Lagos is at the heart of this transition in Nigeria, and forums such as this allow us to foster partnerships that drive sustainable development across key sectors like infrastructure, manufacturing, technology, and renewable energy.”

The Governor expressed delight in the potential of the Forum to address the creation of secure and legal immigration pathways for Nigerians to Italy and Europe.

“This initiative aligns with the values of mutual respect and collaboration, offering new opportunities for cultural and knowledge exchange that strengthen our respective economies.

Lagos, as a global city, has always welcomed such initiatives, as they contribute to the diversity and dynamism that define our economic landscape,” he said.

The Italian Ambassador in Nigeria, Stefano de Leo, affirmed Italy’s readiness to deepen its investment in Nigeria, describing the nation as the future of Africa’s stability.

“This event will be the beginning of fruitful dialogue and discussion as it will facilitate synergies for economic and investment relations. We are strategically looking forward to investment and collaboration in health, training and skills development.

“Italy has always been looking to Africa as it offers its capabilities to solve the myriad challenges of the continent and I enjoin all partners to work together to ensure Nigerian-Italian relations become a success story,” he said.

Representative of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bolaji Akinremi, described Italy as a reliable trading partner, having successfully executed joint venture projects with Nigeria.

“As Nigeria seeks to diversify its economy, Italy’s experience in renewable energy, innovation and agriculture would be invaluable. Italy can also complement Lagos State and Nigeria in infrastructure financing in transportation, energy, enhancing educational ties and boosting resilience, particularly in areas affected by climate change and security,” he said.

Managing Director, NITA, Austin Omobhude described the forum as a remarkable opportunity for Nigeria and Italy to unite for mutual growth, opportunity and sustainable development.

“This is a marriage introduction ceremony of an enduring relationship led by NITA and AGS.”
