Okagbare Grabs Gold, Sets New Record
The phrase ‘Delta no dey carry last’ played out once more Monday night in Glasgow as Delta State-born and Nigeria’s female sprint sensation, Ms. Blessing Okagbare won gold with a spectacular and cool performance to set a new Commonwealth record of 10.85 seconds in the female 100m race.
The athlete was no match for Jamaican rivals Veronica Campbell-Brown (Silver) and Kerron Stewart (Bronze) who both struggled as Okagbare powered to the finish line in one of her finest performances in front of over 70, 000 spectators at the arena, including the sport-loving Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, who was so excited to see Okagbare triumph at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
England’s Asha Philip produced a new personal best of 11.18secs to come fourth.
Okagbare, who still has 200m and long jump gold to grab at the games, said: “A season’s best, a win – I’m just happy I was able to pull it off. After 70m it just felt easy.”
