Police announce rescue of 20 kidnapped medical students, others

Nigerian police authorities said they have secured the release of 20 students who were kidnapped on their way to a convention in the north-central state of Benue last week, they said on Saturday, in a post on X.

The victims, who are medical and dental students, were headed to Enugu, when they were kidnapped by armed gunmen.

Armed gangs have been kidnapping villagers, students and motorists for ransom in northern Nigeria, and this has lately spread to other parts of Nigeria.

“We confirm the release on Friday of our brothers and sisters and some other Nigerians who have been in captivity in Ntunkon forest, Benue state,” Nigerian police spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi said.

He said no ransom was paid, rather they were “rescued tactically and professionally”.
