Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has said it will file a lawsuit against Senate President Godswill Akpabio concerning the disbursement of “holiday allowances” to senators by the Clerk of the National Assembly.

In a terse statement via its official X (Twitter) handle, SERAP announced that it was suing the Senate President who had made the announcement on Monday during plenary.

“We’re suing the Senate President Godswill Akpabio over the alleged payments of “holiday allowances” by the Clerk of the National Assembly into the “various accounts” of senators while some 137 million poor Nigerians face severe economic hardship,” SERAP said.

Senator Akpabio had on Monday made a statement to the effect that some money had been paid into the accounts of senators by the Clerk of the National assembly to enable the senators enjoy their holiday.

However, when the announcement stirred uproar among the senators who felt such gesture should not have been announced at plenary, Akpabio quickly said he was withdrawing the statement and tried to turn it into a joke.

The joke that he has sent prayers into each senator’s mail boxes however did not deflect the import of his first statement which amounted to senators sharing money in a season of anguish among the populace.

Nigerians have since berated the senate for always sharing money even when Nigerians are suffering from the bad leadership of the National Assembly and the Executive.

SERAP did not disclose details of the lawsuit.
