Protest as Police shoot UniOsun students over Yahoo-Yahoo allegation
There is disquiet in Osun State as some trigger-happy policemen, Saturday morning, allegedly shot at some students of the Osun State University who were playing football. The police had dubbed them Yahoo-Yahoo boys before opening fire at the students. The incident happened at the Oke Baale area of Osogbo, the Osun State capital.
A witness said two students were hit by the bullets during the attack and are currently hospitalised.
According to the witness, the students had gathered at a make-shift field where they normally have sporting activities and were already playing the game of football when the police arrived. The cops allegedly shouted Yahoo- Yahoo, an euphemism for advance fee fraudsters (419ers), before shooting at the students.
It was not immediately known whether the policemen were on the trail of some suspected criminals before arriving at the playground.
One of the victims identified as Abiola Kazeem, was said to have been hit on the stomach and was rejected at two hospitals before he was taken to LAUTECH Teaching Hospital Osogbo where he is current recuperating.
The second victim identified simply as Ibrahim was hit by the bullet in the mouth and he is receiving treatment at Our Lady of Fatima Hospital at Jolayemi area of Osogbo.
The Coordinator of the National Association of Nigerian Students in the South West, Mr. Saheed Afolabi, said he was one of those who took the students to the hospital.
Some protesters, who gathered in front of Oke Baale Police Station, attempted to raze the station but policemen on duty resisted them.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mrs. Folashade Odoro, confirmed the incident, saying that officers have been drafted into the area to calm the situation.
She said: “The Commissioner of Police has directed that a full scale investigation should be conducted into the matter. Anybody who is responsible for the dastardly act will be brought to justice.”
