Security men hired by John Lyon could be moles, investigators: Expert defends Police
Since the arrest of John Lyon, also known as IK- Kpai-kpai in Abuja by security men, some Nigerians have blamed the Nigeria police for always acting as security aides to persons of dubious character.
John alleged to be a fraudster and serial kidnapper was busted in Abuja following an actionable intelligence which the police exploited and nabbed the man who is also a staunch member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bayelsa.
John is the brother of David Lyon, the APC governorship candidate in the 2019 election who was declared winner by INEC but whose victory was nullified by the Supreme Court barely 24 hours to his being sworn in.
The apex court ruled that his running mate, Degi Eremienyo Wangagra, submitted a fake certificate to INEC and subsequently ordered that Douye Diri of PDP who came second in the election be issued a certificate of return and sworn in as governor.
But a retired Director of the Directorate of Security Services (DSS) who preferred not to be named said those blaming the police for acting as security aides to some Nigerians of dubious character are wrong because in some cases, the police posted to such persons of shady means perform espionage duties.
“Sometimes when someone suddenly shows up with sudden wealth and begins to apply for security aides, their applications are granted not because the security department wants to protect the person, they also want to discreetly investigate the person without the person knowing it. It is wrong to blame the police when we see such occurrence,’” he explained.
John Lyon has flaunted pictures on social media where he was guided by policemen. He was also popular on social media where he openly flaunts his wealth usually with a display of dollar bills, posh home complete with exotic interior.
Background checks showed that he was born on 22 December 1986 and was once a staff of Sterling Bank.
He owns a company Lyon Interior Hub which he used as a cover to mask his kidnapping business and sundry criminal cartels. John who claims to be a graduate of the University of Calabar is known to frequent clubs in Abuja, Port Harcourt and Yenagoa where he splurges his money.
It was learnt that police had been on his case for some time and were only looking for the most auspicious moment to nab him. That moment came on Saturday a crack squad of police detectives trailed and arrested him in Abuja.
He was seen in viral videos after his arrest, handcuffed and only in boxers, kneeling on the floor and weeping profusely and pleading for mercy. He claimed that his wife had just been delivered of a baby.
Police sources said he had confessed to being a kidnapper but said he only kidnapped two people.
